Torture chamber in Peter and Paul Fortress

The fortress was established by Peter the Great on May 16. 1703. on small Hare Island by the north bank of the Neva River, the last upstream island of the Neva delta. Built at the height of the Northern War in order to protect the projected capital from a feared Swedish counterattack, the fort never fulfilled its martial purpose. The citadel was completed with six bastions in earth and timber within a year, and it was rebuilt in stone from 1706-1740.

From around 1720, the fort served as a base for the city garrison and also as a prison for high ranking or political prisoners. The Trubetskoy bastion, rebuilt in the 1870s, became the main prison block. The first person to escape from the fortress prison was the anarchist Prince Peter Kropotkin in 1876. Other people incarcerated in the “Russian Bastille” include Shneur Zalman of Liadi, Tsarevich Alexis, Artemy Volynsky, Tadeusz Kościuszko, Alexander Radishchev, the Decembrists, Grigory Danilevsky, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Mikhail Bakunin, Nikolai Chernyshevsky and Josip Broz Tito.

Paris’s Hell’s Café from 19th-century

Le Café de L’Enfer was a Hell-themed café in Paris’ red light district (aka Pigalle, the neighborhood of the Moulin Rouge), created in the late 19th century and operating up ’til sometime around the middle of the 20th.

“A hot spot called Hell’s Café lured 19th-century Parisians to the city’s Montmartre neighborhood—like the Marais—on the Right Bank of the Seine. With plaster lost souls writhing on its walls and a bug-eyed devil’s head for a front door, le Café de l’Enfer may have been one of the world’s first theme restaurants. According to one 1899 visitor, the café’s doorman—in a Satan suit—welcomed diners with the greeting, “Enter and be damned!” Hell’s waiters also dressed as devils. An order for three black coffees spiked with cognac was shrieked back to the kitchen as: “Three seething bumpers of molten sins, with a dash of brimstone intensifier!”

Scary cartoons arts by Todd Schorr

Todd Schorr is an American artist and one of the most prominent members of the “Lowbrow” art movement or pop surrealism. Combining a cartoon influenced visual vocabulary with a highly polished technical ability, based on the exacting painting methods of the Old Masters, Schorr weaves intricate narratives that are often biting yet humorous in their commentary on the human condition.

While growing up as a child in New Jersey, Schorr showed a compulsion for drawing at an early age and was enrolled in Saturday morning art classes by the age of five. Deeply affected by fantasy movies such as the 1933 classic King Kong and the early animated cartoons of Walt Disney and Max Fleischer, their influence along with comic books such as Mad would have a lasting effect on Schorr’s developing visual vocabulary.

Are evil creatures really ugly or we just want to believe that they are?

Fallen Angels are demons. But demons and Satan himself are not ugly and putrid as myth says. Satan and the demons are beautiful unimaginably attractive beings. This is how they seduce and deceive and this is how the fallen angels were corrupted, because of their pride in power, knowledge and beauty.

Lucifer

Satan is not Lucifer’s name, but it is a title that was given to him after God damned him from heaven. Lucifer is a Latin word (from the words lucem ferre), literally meaning “light-bearer”, which in that language is used as a name for the dawn appearance of the planet Venus, heralding daylight. A myth of the fall of angels, associated with the Morning Star, was transferred to Satan. Because he contrived “to make his throne higher than the clouds over the earth and resemble ‘My power’ on high”, Satan-Sataniel was hurled down, with his hosts of angels, and since then he has been flying in the air continually above the abyss.

However, some contemporary exorcists and theologians such as Father Jose Antonio Fortea and Father Amorth in their experience and based on Biblical interpretations assert that Lucifer and Satan are different beings. In the New Testament the Adversary has many names, but “Lucifer” is not among them. He is called “Satan”, “devil”, “adversary”, “enemy”, “accuser”, “old serpent”, “great dragon”, Beelzebub and Belial.

The bible doesn’t describe Satan specifically as “the most beautiful angel” but it does say that Satan was perfect in beauty, full of wisdom and adorned. Like all the other angles he was created perfectly and given a certain amount of authority. He was also given free will and because of this, inequity found it’s way into him. It also says that Satan was lifted up because of his beauty, and that he corrupted the wisdom by reason of his brightness.

Lilith

Lilith is a female Mesopotamian night demon believed to harm male children.  In the Talmud and Midrash, Lilith appears as a night demon. She is often identified as the first wife of Adam and sometimes thought to be the mother of all incubi and succubi, a legend that arose in the Middle Ages. Lilith is also sometimes considered to be the paramour of Satan.

She is a mythological female Mesopotamian storm demon associated with wind and was thought to be a bearer of disease, illness, and death. The figure of Lilith first appeared in a class of wind and storm demons or spirits as Lilitu, in Sumer, circa 3000 BC. Many scholars place the origin of the phonetic name “Lilith” at somewhere around 700 BC. Lilith appears as a night demon in Jewish lore and as a screech owl in the King James version of the Bible.

Asmodeus

Asmodeus seems to be of Persian origin and may be identical to the demon Aeshma, one of the seven arch-demons of Persian mythology. According to that tradition, he visited heaven every day to eavesdrop on the angels’ conversations.

asmodeus7 03 Are evil creatures really ugly or we just want to believe that they are?img source

The Latinized version of his name may be derived from the Hebrew, Ashmedai or Shamad (‘to destroy’), and it is among the Jews that Asmodeus achieved his highest degree of power. He belongs to the order of the Seraphim, the highest order of angels, from whence he fell. He is the son of Naamah and Shamdon. In his female incarnation, Asmodeus is the spirit of lust and the beautiful sister of Tubal-Cain.  Asmodeus inspires men with such lust that they betray their wives.

Imamiah

In the cabala, an angel of the order of principalities, or rather an ex-angel of that order, since he is fallen.  In hell he supervises and controls voyages, and destroys and humiliates enemies, when he is invoked to do so, or is so disposed.

He was once one of the 72 angels that bore the name of God Shemhamphorae.

Abaddon – Apollyon

Apollyon – The Greek name, meaning “Destroyer,” given in Revelation 9:11 for “the angel of the bottomless pit” (in Hebrew called Abaddon), also identified as the king of the demonic “locusts” described in Revelation 9:3-10…In one manuscript, instead of Apollyon the text reads “Apollo,” the Greek god of death and pestilence as well as of the sun, music, poetry, crops and herds, and medicine.

In the Hebrew scriptures, Abaddon comes to mean “place of destruction,” or the realm of the dead, and is associated with Sheol

Evil Creatures of the Night

Many strange animals and creatures exist in the world of mythology. Almost every culture in the world has stories about some sort of mythological animals. How could people defend themselves against these blood-hungry creatures when they also had the ability to shapeshift into bats, wolves, and luminous fogs? And then there were the supernatural beings, such as the incubus and the succubus, who were more interested in seizing human souls than in sucking human blood. Such creatures were painted by Stone Age artists more than 10,000 years ago and represent some of the world’s oldest cave art—and they probably precipitated some of the world’s first nightmares. There is no known culture on this planet that has not at one time or another cowered in fear because of the savage attacks of a nocturnal predator known as a therianthrope, a human-animal hybrid such as a werewolf, “werebear,” “werelion,” or a “were-something.” It is difficult for those living in the modern world to imagine the night terrors of our ancestors as they prepared to face the demon- and monster-riddled world after sundown.

Chupacabras

The chupacabras  ( from chupar  “to suck” and cabra “goat”, literally “goat sucker”), is a legendary cryptid  (a creature whose existence has been suggested but is regarded as highly unlikely) rumored to inhabit parts of the Americas. It is associated more recently with sightings of an allegedly unknown animal in Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the United States, especially in the latter’s Latin American communities.

chupacabras Evil Creatures of the Night chupacabra 2 Evil Creatures of the Night

The name comes from the animal’s reported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock, especially goats. Physical descriptions of the creature vary. Eyewitness sightings have been claimed as early as 1990 in Puerto Rico, and have since been reported as far north as Maine, and as far south as Chile. It is supposedly a heavy creature, the size of a small bear, with a row of spines reaching from the neck to the base of the tail. Biologists and wildlife management officials view the chupacabras as a contemporary legend.

Ghoul

A ghoul is a folkloric monster associated with graveyards and consuming human flesh, often classified as undead.

ghoul 207x300 Evil Creatures of the NightGhoul 1 Evil Creatures of the Night

The oldest surviving literature that mention ghouls is likely One Thousand and One Nights. The term is first attested in English in 1786, in William Beckford’s Orientalist  novel Vathek,  which describes the ghūl of Arabian folklore.

Imp

An imp is a mythological being similar to a fairy or demon, frequently described in folklore and superstition. The word may perhaps derive from the term ympe, used to denote a young grafted  tree. Over the years, the word came to refer to smallish entities that were direct offspring of the Devil and sent from hell to do evil deeds to humans on Earth. Imps might well be called junior demons, and one of their principal assignments, according to Christian authorities, was to disguise themselves as black cats, owls, ravens, or some other animal and serve as a witch’s familiar. In many of the transcripts of the European witchcraft trials, the demonic spirit given by the Devil to a witch to do his or her bidding was referred to as an imp.

imp Evil Creatures of the Night imp 1 300x300 Evil Creatures of the Night

Imps are considered “fallen fairies” and are often described as mischievous more than seriously threatening, and as lesser beings rather than more important supernatural beings. The attendants of the devil are sometimes described as imps. They are usually described as lively and having small stature.

Jersey devil

Some witnesses say that the Jersey Devil that haunts the Pine Barrens in southeastern New Jersey is a cross between a goat and a dog with cloven hoofs and the head of a collie. Others swear that it has a horse’s head with the body of a kangaroo. Most of the people who have sighted the creature mention a long tail, and nearly all of the witnesses agree that the thing has wings. But it doesn’t really fly as much as it hops and glides.

Jersey devil Evil Creatures of the Night Jersey devil 1 171x300 Evil Creatures of the Night

Most accounts of the Jersey Devil legend attribute the creature to a “Mother Leeds”, a supposed witch, although the tale has many variations. According to one version, she invoked the devil while giving birth to her 13th child, and when the baby was born, it either immediately or soon afterwards transformed into a devil like creature and flew off into the surrounding pines.

Succubus

A succubus is a female demonic legendary creature who seduces men in their sleep. Similar to a vampire, succubi draw energy from men to sustain themselves. In the past succubi were depicted as frightening and demonic, usually with wings and a tail. Sometimes the wings are that of a bat or a bird. The tail takes various shapes, sometimes that of a snake or an aquatic tail like that of a mermaid.

Succubus Evil Creatures of the Night Succubus 1 Evil Creatures of the Night

Succubi appear to men as beautiful, sensual women, tempting and promising, but they also may be vampires thirsting for human blood. While those males who consort with a succubus often meet an untimely end, on occasion their interaction with the entity brings about a horde of demonic children, who will one day gather at his deathbed and hail him as their father.

Vampires

Vampires are mythological or folkloric  beings who subsist by feeding on the life essence (generally in the form of blood) of living creatures, regardless of whether they are undead or a living person.

Vampires 212x300 Evil Creatures of the Night Vampires 1 231x300 Evil Creatures of the Night

Although vampiric entities have been recorded in many cultures and according to speculation by literary historian Brian Frost that the “belief in vampires and bloodsucking demons is as old as man himself”, and may go back to “prehistoric times”, the term vampire was not popularized until the early 18th century, after an influx of vampire superstition into Western Europe from areas where vampire legends were frequent, such as the Balkans and Eastern Europe, although local variants were also known by different names, such as vampir  (вампир) in Serbia and Bulgaria, vrykolakas  in Greece  and strigoi  in Romania. This increased level of vampire superstition in Europe led to mass hysteria and in some cases resulted in corpses actually being staked and people being accused of vampirism.

Werewolf

A werewolf or werwolf, also known as a lycanthrope, is a mythological  or folkloric  human with the ability to shapeshift  into a wolf or an anthropomorphic wolf-like creature, either purposely, by being bitten or scratched by another werewolf, or after being placed under a curse. This transformation is often associated with the appearance of the full moon, as popularly noted by the medieval chronicler Gervase of Tilbury, and perhaps in earlier times among the ancient Greeks through the writings of Petronius.

Werewolf 188x300 Evil Creatures of the Night Werewolf 1 232x300 Evil Creatures of the Night

Werewolves are often attributed super-human strength and senses, far beyond those of both wolves or men. The werewolf is generally held as a European character, although its lore spread through the world in later times. Shape-shifters, similar to werewolves, are common in tales from all over the world, most notably amongst the Native Americans, though most of them involve animal forms other than wolves.

lake of skeletons 11 300x225 Interested in visiting a lake of skeletons?Roopkund is in Uttarakhand in India and is famous for its skeleton lake. This lake consists of about 400 skeletons. The actual reason for the death of all these people remains a mystery even today. Countless theories for the reason of this lake of skeletons were put forth through the past couple of decades. Many believed that it was a ritualistic sacrifice bestowed by the people who died themselves while scientists say that these people died because of an epidemic. The lake was discovered by a park ranger in 1942 by accident. After extensive research on the area, scientists were able to uncover the actual reason for the deaths. The scientists concluded that the group of people died from a large hailstorm in the region. They could not find any shelter in the open Himalayan mountains which lead to mass death. The lake is covered with ice for most part of the year. However, there are several treks that are conducted around the area and is a good option to explore if you want to get a glimpse of this skeleton lake.

Evil Eye in Religion

The evil eye is a commonly known concept in folklore, but evil eye in religions is also a controversial topic. Since it affected people’s beliefs, various religions addressed it as well. But first things first, what is the evil eye? In a nutshell, giving the evil eye means sending someone a malicious gaze that, in most cultures, is believed to be a sign of envy and can send destructive energies to another person. In short, it’s like sending harm to the person one is envious of.

The evil eye in religion is considered from two viewpoints. First, it is a weapon that can harm people. Second, it is a trap that people can fall into. So in religion, people are not only protected from the effects of evil eye, but are also warned not to fall into the temptation to give someone an evil eye.

The evil eye in religions is faced with different reactions. Different cultures also have different ways of protecting against it. For example, Indians believed in the removal of the effects of the evil eye in a Hindu ritual which involved rotating a holy flame around the face of the inflicted person so that the effects will be absorbed. Several other rituals are also known to do the same thing. In some countries, such as Bangladesh, large black-colored dots are placed on a person’s forehead as a protection from the evil eye.

The Greeks, on the other hand, believed in xematiasma, a process where a healer recites a prayer that is passed over from a grandparent. This prayer is not to be revealed in just any situation. It is said that there are many versions of the prayer. The Muslims also have a prayer, which is the Zoroastrian prayer, used to protect and counter the effects of evil eye.

The ancient Romans, however, believed in using charms and ornaments that protected against the evil eye. In Latin, an evil eye charm is called fascinum, a name taken from the word fascinare, or fascinate in English. This word can be taken to mean “to cast a spell,” just like what is done when someone gives an evil eye.

The means of protecting against the evil eye as used by the Romans have been adopted by most believers of the evil eye. A lot of these believers now rely on evil eye jewelry such as evil eye bracelets and pendants, among many others.

Evil eye jewelry, which is sometimes also called lucky eye jewelry, also go by various names and come in various types. But regardless of such differences, one thing is for sure. For every believer of the evil eye and its potential dangers, a protective charm such as evil eye bracelets can go a long way in ensuring your safety against the harmful effects of a simple, seemingly harmless look.

Evil eye jewelry is widely accepted in various concepts of evil eye in religions. And to meet various preferences, evil eye jewelry comes in various forms; there are amulets in gold or silver, and there are fancy colorful ones. This means you are not just protected, but you can also choose a charm that best fits your preferences.

Britain’s most senior Catholic admits ‘evil’ clergy abuse has led to ‘great public humiliation’ of Church

Cardinal Keith O’Brien, the Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, will also tell worshippers on Easter Sunday that the cover-up of “evil” paedophilia by senior clergy “brings shame on us all”.

However he insisted that the faithful must not turn away from the church, just as voters disillusioned by the state of politics should still cast their ballots.

His forthright comments on one of the most important days in the Christian calendar highlight the concern felt at the highest levels of the church about the effect of clergy sex abuse scandals unfolding around the world.

The head of the Catholic church in Ireland, Cardinal Sean Brady, is under intense pressure to stand down following two damning official reports in the past year which found that sexual abuse was “endemic” in church-run schools. The country’s hierarchy was said to have had allowed known abusers to move to other parishes rather than reporting them to police, in order to protect its reputation.

Police in Northern Ireland announced on Thursday that they have set up a dedicated team to look into child abuse by clergy “in light of the number and nature of recent allegations”.

Meanwhile historic cases of abuse in Germany and America have led to accusations that Pope Benedict XVI himself, in his former roles during the 1980s and 1990s, had allowed guilty priests to escape punishment. The pontiff warned of the dangers of “the petty gossip of dominant opinion” in his Palm Sunday address at St Peter’s.

Anger at the church from abuse survivors, equality campaigners and secularist groups is likely to mean higher security is required when the Pope makes his historic first state visit to England and Scotland in September. He may also hold a private meeting with victims, as he did on earlier trips to Australia and the US.

In his Homily to be delivered at St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh on Easter Sunday, Cardinal O’Brien will acknowledge the harm done to the Catholic church worldwide and its 1billion followers by the recent claims, and apologise to victims.

He will say: “We have become more aware of the failures of some members of our Church whether Bishops and Priests, religious or lay people and indeed Pope Benedict XVI in a recent letter indicates how he is aware of the human frailty of us all.

“Many evils have been committed throughout the world particularly with regard to the sexual abuse of children and young people. I myself as long ago as 2002 indicated my own personal abhorrence of this terrible crime and said at that time that I apologised to ‘anyone who has suffered any abuse at the hands of any one representing the Catholic Church’. I restate and reiterate that apology today.

“Crimes against children have indeed been committed and any Catholics who were aware of such crimes and did not act to report them, brings shame on us all. We can take no comfort from the fact that only a small percentage of priests committed such crimes – the impact of their sinful acts is very large – their actions, harmed the lives of their victims, caused great hatred to be directed at their innocent brother priests and left ordinary Catholics demoralised and confused.

“One might say that there has been a great ‘public humiliation’ of the Church as in some way or another we realise that we have not been as alert as we should have been to the evils being perpetrated around us whatever our particular position. Those involved in these crimes must apologise and ask forgiveness from those who have been offended as well as of course from Almighty God himself.”

Cardinal O’Brien, the head of the church in Scotland who has been an outspoken critic of Labour’s laws and secularisation, will go on to say that “things are not always as they should be” in society at large.

He will call on voters to cast their ballots according to their conscience, after assessing candidates by Christian standards.

The Cardinal will draw a parallel between the loss of public trust in MPs and clergy, saying: “I would suggest that we should no more turn away from the Church than we should turn against our democracy.

“Whatever flaws or personal failings afflict them, it remains the case that the overwhelming majority of priests and politicians are honourable and honest – seeking to live out their beliefs and serve society around them.”

Is the Muslim Religion Evil?

Over the past few years thousands of lives have been lost by the bombings of suicide Muslim fundamentalist terrorists, the most recent in a Western country being the underground rail and bus bombings in London in June/July this year. This has led to anti-Muslim attitudes increasing in Western countries including Australia and to many Christians labelling Islam as an evil religion, much to the embarrassment of Christian missionaries working in Muslim countries. Does the Koran teach or condone these killings?

One passage in the Koran, cited by those who say Islam is an evil religion, is this

“Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits, for Allah loves not transgressors. And kill them whenever you catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out – – – if they fight you, kill them.”

That appears to be damning evidence against Islam. But this passage must be seen in its context. These words were directed against the idol-worshipping tribes of Medina who were trying to wipe out Mohammed and his followers. Mohammed was engaged in a life and death struggle to establish his monotheistic religion. His words were not a call for a jihad, a command for his followers to kill “all infidels” as Islamic fundamentalist Imams and terrorist organisations claim. Are we to judge Islam by the actions of a few bigoted fundamentalist Imams and their followers or by quoting extreme passages from the Koran? Is that the only teaching of the Koran?

The overwhelming teaching of the Koran is for Jews and Christians to be treated with reverence and respect. Mohammed considered Jesus a prophet through whom God had spoken. He taught that Christians would achieve salvation if they lived up to the teachings of Jesus. Since the early days of Islam things have changed. Over the centuries the two religions have been bitterly opposed to one another. The Crusades were a time of bitter fighting and dreadful atrocities on both sides. Today the animosity continues and writers speak of a “clash of cultures” which in reality is a clash of religions. Islam is a missionary religion and wants to see the world become an Islamic world. In countries where Muslims predominate Christians are usually regarded as second-class citizens and suffer restrictions on practising their faith. Proselytising is strictly forbidden. But when Muslims emigrate to a Christian country they demand the right to proselytise Christians.

One could go on enumerating the difference between Christianity and Islam. But what can be done to achieve greater understanding between Christians and Muslims? In A.D. 1219, at the time of the Fifth Crusade, St Francis of Assisi made an attempt at reconciliation between the two sides by visiting the great sultan, Al Kamil, the leader of the Muslim armies, and sharing the salvation and love of Jesus with him. He stayed some time with the sultan. The visit changed the lives of both men and led the sultan to say, “Oh Francis, if I ever meet another Christian like you, I will become a Christian”. Francis had expected to meet a barbaric pagan. Instead he met a highly cultured and deeply spiritual man. One writer says: “He found something of Jesus alive and well in his new friend, so much so that they were able to pray together”. We today need to have the same understanding of and compassion for Muslims that Francis had. Because of the worldwide tension today between Christian and Islamic nations and our concentration on the things that divide us we often fail to realise that the two religions have important things in common. There are two in particular. Christianity and Islam are both monotheistic religions and both accept the Old Testament as holy scripture.

Of course there are profound differences between the two religions and I would in no way gloss over them. The goal for Muslims is to be like Mohammed who taught if necessary you could kill your enemy. The aim of Christians is to be like Jesus who taught that we love our enemies and do good to those who would harm us. But in judging Islam we should endeavour to see the best in it and not concentrate on its worst features. None of us would like the Christian faith to be judged by Deuteronomy 7:1-2 calling for “ethnic cleansing”: or by Leviticus 20:10-13 calling for the death penalty for adultery and homosexual acts or by the barbaric behaviour of the Crusaders. Demonising all Muslims because of the atrocities of a few fundamentalist Muslim terrorists – disowned by the vast majority of Muslims worldwide – is wrong, We must be fair in our criticisms and loving in our actions.

In one of his books Tony Campolo, American sociologist and Christian author, tells of a Princeton Theological Seminary student asking the great Swiss Protestant theologian, Karl Barth, whether he thought religions other than Christianity were valid ways to God. Barth answered, “No! No religion can provide a valid way to God and His salvation. Not even the Christian religion. Only Jesus Christ can serve as a mediator to God”. Campolo goes on to say: “It may be the case that many who never called themselves Christian were truly possessed by Christ and will be invited into the eternal kingdom”.

The Australian Prime Minister is to be commended for calling a summit meeting with Muslim leaders. This will enable the government and Muslim leaders to work together to improve relations between Muslims and rest of the community. As Christians we too have an important role to play. To us has been entrusted the “ministry of reconciliation”. We must build relationships of trust between Christians and Muslims. Distorting the beliefs of others has never won a lasting victory for the Christian church. As that great missionary to Muslims, Temple Gardiner of Cairo (1871-1928)

once said “The Spirit of Jesus is the only asset of the church”.

Fishing, Vultures, Hyenas, & Shotguns

It may be a correct action to consult with a religious leader. It may be a correct action only if he does not give answers to your questions. He should help you explore your values. You can create your own answers to your questions. This preserves your free will. Sin is that which interferes with God’s Plan.

Remember that leaders of organized religions are skilled, practiced, and very often college trained at what they do. They have learned to use a constant stream of words to first numb your reason. Second they build a sense of guilt in your emotional brain. Third, they “set the hook” and drag you into the boat. Be careful around them. Watch out for the gaff.

While you are flopping around and gasping for life in the bottom of the boat, your pockets will spill their contents. Eventually you, the essential you, will die. Or, maybe on a whim, once your pockets are empty, they’ll throw you back into the water. Allow you to fill your pockets again, for the next time they need a contribution. Preparing for the time when they want to build another wing on the church.

Jesus said, “Follow Me. I will make you fishers of men.” Matt. 4:17-22.

If you fish, you will understand the following. If you do not fish, you will need to prepare yourself with some study. Go on a field trip so that you can fully appreciate the art and science of fishing. At the most basic level, to fish you either cast a net, or cast a line with a hook.

A net seems obvious, but in fact it is made with a great many fine filaments. It is most commonly not cast. It is set out in some fashion to surround a large area. It is then drawn tight to surround, encircle, and trap (netting) the desired fish.

Casting a line with a hook has an infinite variety of possibilities. These are the choices which the fisherman makes depending upon the fish being sought. Choices include salt or fresh water. Bait or lure fishing. Live bait or dead bait. Life-like lures or representations for spin casting and fly fishing. Wet, or dry fly fishing. These initial choices then lead to other choices of fishing poles, reels, tackle boxes, line, leader, and hooks.

Dry fly fishermen consider themselves artists. The purists are those who tie their own flies. These are used to seek out and lure the wily predator fish out of its lair.

Since this is to only be a short study of fishing, leave out any consideration of boats, motors, fish finders, anchors, boat trailers, hitches, and towing vehicles. Assume that you will fish from shore, or dock.

As a part of your religious education, take the time to go to a large sporting goods store and wander the fishing department. Observe, ask questions, and take notes.

There are hundreds of decisions (choices) that a fisherman has to make. There are hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, that are to be spent. Every choice is important. When you have done all of this leg work, there is still more to be done, because now you must decide where you will go to fish.

As an illustration, when I decided to become a fresh water trout fisherman I was living near the Salton Sea in the desert of California. I didn’t catch any trout until I got to Alturas County in that state. Check the map of California. Why such a distance? Answer: other fishermen. There were streams on the east side of the Sierra with a fisherman on every six feet of stream bank!

Fishermen have been chasing fish as a predator for a long time. At least as long as men have been seeking religious power over their fellow men. Hooking men and women with religion is at least as complicated. There are at least as many variations and subtleties as dry fly barbless trout fishing. And without the requirement for catch and release.

The question is, what kind of fish are you? What kind of bait, or lure, or dry fly will cause you to rise? What pattern of feathers and glitter is required to get you to open your mouth and take a bite? What is the best kind of hook to use to snag your lip? What is the best technique to use to bring you to shore? Are you best put in the creel, or kept alive?

What kind of fish are you? Your predator is here. It is a predator of predators.

Answers to religious questions and actions of religious faith are the responsibility of the individual. You must decide what is, or is not appropriate for you to do.

Always to be avoided are persons who presume to tell you what is “right”, what is “wrong”. Always to be avoided are persons who tell you what you should do. Always to be avoided are persons who attempt to entice you to do something for a religious reason. Always to be avoided are persons who attempt to entice you to do something which you have not previously decided to do. Stay away from them.

Predators come in many forms. Most predators of humans have learned to smile, and soothe your fears. They have learned to tell you what they think you want to hear. They appeal to your basic instincts and fears.

The most dangerous decisions are all those apparently small inconsequential choices. Choices which are made impromptu, “on the spot”, via “snap decisions”. Choices made without the careful thought of the conscious 10% of your brain. Choices made when you are tired. Choices made when you are stressed. Choices made when you are ill. Choices made when you are suffering from a headache. Choices made when you are grieving a loved one’s death. In any of these circumstances do not make decisions more important than what to have for lunch.

The human vultures watch the newspaper’s obituaries. Then the human vultures gather around for their share of the feast.

Don’t buy anything at such a time in your life. Don’t sell anything at such a time in your life. Don’t make promises in writing. Don’t even make promises verbally. Don’t pledge anything to anyone in writing. Don’t pledge anything to anyone verbally. Don’t pledge, or promise, anything to any group. Don’t pledge, or promise, anything to any institution. Don’t pledge, or promise, anything, even verbally, and especially not in writing.

At these times, only the animal unconscious 90% of your brain is working. It is ticking along like a cold-blooded computer. It has no inhibitions. It has no morals. That brain is never shut off. Your normal natural inhibitions are at their lowest levels. Your normal natural cautious skepticism is at its lowest levels.

The low-life human scavengers know this. The low-life human vultures are planning to take advantage of it. The low-life human hyenas are planning to take advantage of you. By their suits and smiles, you will know them. By their arrival, you will know them. By their signs, their tape recorders and their documents, you will know them.

Don’t be nice to them. Don’t even be courteous to them. Don’t smile and don’t say please to them. Show them the door. Show them the exit gate to your property. Show them your 12 gauge pump shotgun. Pump a shell into the chamber. Now show them the end where the buckshot leaves the barrel.
